Dear Comrades,

RE: APPRECIATION FOR YOUR SOLIDARITY WITH SUFFERING ZIMBABWEANS

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions would like to express its sincere appreciation for the big role played by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African Transport Workers’ Union (SATAWU) when the Chinese ship An Yue Jiang wanted to offload arms of war destined for Zimbabwe at the Durban port.

The action by SATAWU has gone a long way in upping the interest of the rest of the world to the Zimbabwean crisis. Your action was very critical as Zimbabwe can ill afford to be importing arms of war when millions of its citizens are suffering and dying as a result of hunger and disease. Furthermore, we know these arms will be used on our people as violence in both rural and urban areas has seen thousands of people fleeing their homes to seek shelter elsewhere at a time when a stalemate has been reached because ZANU PF has decided to hold on to the Presidential poll results. It is now a month since Zimbabwe went to elections.

On behalf of the Zimbabwean workers, the ZCTU salutes SATAWU and COSATU for the unwavering support rendered.

Yours in workers’ struggle,

Japhet Moyo
