ANC Media Release, 6 March 2008

Killing of civilians in Gaza

The African National Congress condemns and deplores the senseless killing of civilians, including women and children, in Gaza by Israeli forces.

The situation in Gaza is a humanitarian catastrophe; the conditions of the people of the territory are worse than they have been in over 40 years of unending crisis.

The denial of basic foodstuff and health care provisions and the continuing bombardment of civilian areas is unacceptable. The blockade of the Palestinian territories, and Gaza in particular, is a flagrant breach of international law.

The ANC condemns the collective punishment of the Palestinian people, as it condemns all attacks on civilians.

Medical teams and ambulance must be given free and unhindered passage to attend to the wounded.
We call on the Israeli government to halt the deadly military assaults on the people of Gaza.

We call on the government and people of Israel to respect international humanitarian law.

We call on the people of Israel and the people of Palestine to cease hostilities and to resume meaningful dialogue towards a just and lasting peace.
