The Joubert Park Project invites you to the launch of

156 Hands that Built South Africa

A book by Phyllis Naidoo on the 1956 Treason Trial
Until the Delmas Treason Trial of the mid 1980s, the 1956 Treason Trial was the longest such trial ever held in South Africa. In the early hours of the morning, in December 1956, 156 leaders were rounded up through-out the country and charged with treason.

Phyllis Naidoo has sought to chronicle the lives of each of those 156 trialists, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the trial. This has not been an easy task. During the 5 decades that have passed, some have become household names, some have died, some have left the country, some have joined different political parties, and some were simply not traceable.

The book contextualises the trial in the mid to late 1950s; a period that was characterised by mass resistance and concomitant severe repression, culminating in the events of Sharpeville and the bannings of 1960.

In 1956 Phyllis Naidoo assisted the families of those charged for treason. Today, 50 years later Phyllis Naidoo has written a book about the lives of those 156 people “156 Hands That Built SA - (The 1956 Treason Trial)”

Phyllis Naidoo, “Aunt Phil” to many - lawyer, teacher and human rights activist has a long history in the fight against oppression and injustice. This led to her first banning order in 1966, and by 1977 she had to flee South Africa to avoid detention. Whilst in Lesotho she together with 5 other people were seriously injured by a parcel bomb. By 1983 she was forced again to uproot and fled to Zimbabwe. In 1990, after the ANC was unbanned, Phyllis returned to South Africa and currently lives and works in Durban.
